The Biota Blue Mandarin Fish (Synchiropus splendidus) is a stunning addition to a marine aquarium, celebrated for its intricate, psychedelic patterns of bright blue, orange, and green. Being captive-bred, these specific individuals are often much hardier than their wild-caught counterparts and are more likely to accept prepared aquarium foods.

  • Care Level: Moderate

  • Temperament: Peaceful

  • Reef Compatible: Yes

  • Diet: Carnivore (Relies on a steady supply of microfauna; captive-bred individuals may accept frozen mysis or enriched brine shrimp)

  • Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons (with established rockwork)

Species Overview: The Blue Mandarin is a member of the dragonet family. While known to be a shy species, they are highly active foragers, constantly patrolling live rock in search of copepods and other tiny crustaceans. Because of their specialized diet, they are best suited for well-established, mature reef systems that provide a natural, ongoing food source.

Aquarium Care: Provide a tank with plenty of live rock and sand substrate to support a population of copepods. While captive-bred specimens are more adaptable to commercial foods than wild-caught ones, it is still recommended to provide a refugium to maintain a continuous supply of live microorganisms. They are slow swimmers and peaceful, making them ideal tank mates for other non-aggressive species; however, they should not be kept with overly competitive or aggressive feeders that might outcompete them for food.
