We Suggest Check valves on all sump systems between the return pump and the aquarium bulkhead. The water volume in every sump is going to be limited and the more you can conserve that space the better the odds are of it not overflowing or getting damaged from constantly being stressed from filling too much too often. The purpose of the double union is to gain access to the valve for easy cleaning to be able to ensure proper use, and they make it easy to remove your pump if installed properly as well.
