Scopus Tang (Zebrasoma scopas)

The Scopus Tang, also known as the Brushtail Tang, is a wonderful addition to the home aquarium for both beginners and experienced hobbyists alike. Known for its calm demeanor and excellent algae-grazing capabilities, this hardy species is a fantastic choice for maintaining a clean and vibrant reef tank.

Why You’ll Love It:

  • Unique Aesthetic: Sporting a sophisticated color palette that transitions from dark brown to a beautiful, subtle yellow on the posterior, its appearance is both understated and elegant.

  • Natural Algae Control: This fish is a tireless worker, constantly grazing on rockwork to help keep your tank clear of nuisance algae.

  • Peaceful Temperament: Compared to other members of the Zebrasoma genus, the Scopus Tang is generally more peaceful, making it a great community fish for a well-stocked system.

Care Specifications:

  • Dietary Needs: While they are omnivorous grazers, they require a diet rich in vegetable matter to thrive. We recommend supplementing their grazing with high-quality marine flakes, pellets, and sheets of nori (dried seaweed).

  • Tank Requirements: To ensure this active swimmer stays happy and healthy, we recommend a tank size of at least 75–90 gallons. Provide plenty of open swimming space alongside porous live rock for grazing.

  • Compatibility: They are generally reef-safe and get along well with most tank mates, though it is best to introduce them after more peaceful species.
